LEMITOR engages in various areas, including our role as a partner in the LIFE Tree Check program. This initiative primarily aims to address challenges related to climate change and implement solutions to mitigate its impacts. One of our achievements in this area is our collaboration in developing the Tree Check App, which won in the Climate Action category.
Program LIFE Tree Check (LTCH)
The goal of this eco-friendly program is to support administrators and green space managers in effectively responding to the challenges posed by climate change. The LTCH project focuses on Central European cities, assisting them in dealing with the increasingly tangible effects of climate change. The efforts are primarily centered on adaptive measures to climate change.
Additionally, the foundation organizes an annual contest for the European Tree of the Year, which promotes environmental awareness and the protection of natural resources. The winner of the latest edition was a two-hundred-year-old common beech (Fagus sylvatica) located in the Arboretum Wojsławice botanical garden.
Urban Heat Island (UHI)
Climate change is considered one of the greatest challenges in the coming years, impacting entire ecosystems. Among the most affected are urban centers, characterized by high population density. Within these areas, a phenomenon known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) can occur, which the LTCH foundation aims to mitigate. Efforts are focused on enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of planning and decision-making processes related to green infrastructure. The foundation’s mission is to counteract the effects of UHI, which occurs alongside heatwaves, creating a temperature difference compared to surrounding rural areas. Through such initiatives, LTCH seeks to protect cities from excessive heat and improve the living conditions of their residents.
As part of our collaboration with the LTCH foundation, we conducted a workshop titled “How to Enhance the Adaptive Potential of Urban Investments?” The event was aimed at local government representatives, city administration managers, officials responsible for preparing and implementing urban investment projects, and individuals involved in managing urban green spaces. The workshop not only provided an opportunity to present the challenges that need to be addressed but also to discuss potential solutions regarding urban greenery.
LIFE Awards 2024
We participated in the development of the Tree Check App, which allows everyone to deepen their knowledge about urban greenery and its crucial role in the environment. The project has been recognized and appreciated, winning an award in the category of Climate Actions.
The software enables users to identify and learn about trees, focusing primarily on their cooling effects. The Tree Check App aims to raise public awareness and cool down cities through engaging activities. Users can model the impact of plantings on local temperatures, obtaining information on water evaporation rates of trees in summer, the shade provided by their leaves, and their influence on the surrounding environment.
Using the latest technologies, including artificial intelligence, the app allows users to take photos and analyze data in real time. Although the solution is mainly targeted at designers, architects, urban planners, green space managers, and landscaping contractors, anyone can download the app to their smartphone (available for Android and iOS) and actively contribute to combating climate change.
